First popularized by their first hit song "The Way You Look Tonight" in 1961, which reached Number 13 on the Billboard chart, and later that year, "When I Fall in Love" hit Number 7, establishing the trio as the most romantic singing group of the 1960s! The original group of Tony Butala, Jim Pike, and Bob Engemann began recording in 1959, and since that time, the Lettermen trio has been recording and performing continuously for over 50 years. Now consisting of Tony Butala (the group's founding original member), Donovan Tea (an accomplished singer-songwriter who has been an important member of the group for over 30 years), and Bobby Poynton (who first joined in 1989 and has recently returned).
Throughout the years, The Lettermen have produced more than 70 albums, with 18 of those being certified gold worldwide. Four of those gold-certified albums are The Lettermen...And Live (1967), Goin' Out of My Mind (1968), Best of the Lettermen (1969), and Hurt So Bad (1970). More recent albums include The Lettermen Greatest Movie Hits, The Lettermen Best of Broadway, and The Lettermen Live in the Philippines. The group has performed at more than 10,000 sold-out shows, and during their tours abroad, they have visited Japan, the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, France, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia. They have also toured with George Burns, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, and Bill Cosby, and have made over 200 appearances on television shows like Dick Clark's American Bandstand and variety shows.
