Apple Butter Makin' Days in Mount Vernon, MO
With over 350 booths and plenty of activities, you will want to bring the whole family along to visit Apple Butter Makin' Days. The festival is home to a multitude of shops and wares, entertainment, and food, including it's very namesake Apple Butter!
Apple Butter Makin' Days has been held on the square in Mount Vernon, MO since 1967, taking place every October, rain or shine. Apple Butter is made right on the square in copper kettles over open fires, churned and mixed all day, until sugar and spices are added in and it is put in jars for you to take home. Before the sun rises each morning of the festival, the fires are stoked up and peeled apples are tossed into the kettles to begin the process of making fresh Apple Butter. After hours of stirring, sugar and spices are added in to give the mixture that distinctive flavor, and after nearly 12 hours of cook time, the apple butter is ladled into jars and sold less than ten feet away!
The entertainment is designed to appeal to every age group. Entertainment included music from Riff Raff, a country-rock band that plays your favorites along with some of their own songs, and a well practiced bluegrass band called Bright Water Junction that delivered your favorites from the genre, as well as tossing some of their original work into the performance. Don't miss the ABMD Parade which features a saddle club with multiple horse breeds, hot rods and roadster cars that are more than happy to honk their horn or rev their engine for you, and a steam engine train float from the Shriners! The train float came equipped with steam billowing from the smoke-stack, bells, and whistles, and I was enchanted watching it turn the corner and make it's way around the square. Just a few other things going on are Weenie Dog Races, an apple peeling contest, and even a gun fight on the square.
When making your rounds around the square, you may be a little overwhelmed by the sheer amount of shops set up. Pick up a new hand-carved bench for your garden or buy some flattened glass bottles to hang in your tool-shed. Hand-made metal lawn ornaments, tutu dresses and children's clothing, slingshot guns and wooden swords, engraved and cut-out jewelry, and hand-blown glass animals and figures are just a few of the many wares you'll find around the square. The possibilities are endless, and if you're looking for a diamond-in-the-rough shop, you're bound to find it here!
The amount of food available at the festival is unrivaled; pulled pork sandwich meals, burgers and hot dogs, caramel apples, funnel cakes, taco salad, kettle corn, hot roasted nuts, and homemade ice cream are among the many stops where you can pick up something for lunch or satisfy your sweet tooth. And don't forget to pick up your own jar of Apple Butter, freshly packaged from the copper kettles.
Your kids won't feel left out when they come with you to Apple Butter Makin' Days either. There are plenty of shops that sell children's toys and accessories, as well as activities like the Pet Parade, Apple Pie Eating Contest, Terrapin Race, and the Bubble Gum Blowing contest. They can stop in and get their faces painted, and walk around their own pet puppet animal that will keep them entertained all day.
There are so many reasons why you should plan a day trip to Apple Butter Makin' Days. Watch Apple Butter being made before your eyes, take a jar home with you, shop until you drop and watch all of the great entertainment that waits at this amazing Fall Festival!
