While you're visiting the Branson area, spend a day or two exploring the many great attractions in neighboring cities and in the surrounding countryside with an exciting day trip. Whether you're heading north to Springfield, west to Springdale, or any direction, there is plenty to explore in the neighboring areas.
Whether you are flying into the Springfield Airport on your way to Branson, or simply driving through the area, Springfield is a great destination for a day trip. Springfield sits just thirty minutes north of Branson, and provides you with exciting attractions. The 1984 Arcade is a family favorite, taking you back to a 1980s styles video arcade with 80s video games and classic tunes playing in the background. The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame features exhibits and displays on sports ranging from fishing to baseball, and has several interactive areas to keep the kids entertained. Take a walk back in time to explore the locomotives and rail history displays at the Railroad Historical Museum. For some outdoor recreation, head to Springfield's Galloway Park, an expansive trail system stretching thirty miles that is ideal for biking, hiking, and jogging.
You can spend a full day in Springfield simply exploring the sporting venues in the area. At Cooper Tennis Complex, you can catch professional tennis at a 2,500 outdoor arena. Catch major league baseball action at Hammons Field, home of the Cardinals. For drag racing, street racing, and other auto excitement, head to the Ozark International Raceway.
Biking enthusiasts will want to head out to nearby Willard for a day of outdoor recreation. In Willard, you will find the Frisco Highline Trail, and the Katy Trail, both offer miles and miles of bike trails through the scenic Missouri countryside, passing through wilderness areas, as well as over quaint bridges and by charming towns.
Farther out from Springfield is the city of Carthage, home to the impressive Fountain of Angels at Precious Moments. This amazing fountain shoots water 80-feet into the air and dances with music and lights to create a truly breathtaking sight. Also at Precious Moments is a gorgeous chapel filled with colorful stained glass depictions and an awe-inspiring 9,000 square feet of wall murals and ceiling paintings.
To the east, you can spend some time exploring the Laura Ingalls Wilder Home and Museum. This exciting museum features over one years worth of family history, and includes many personal effects of Wilder, author of the Little House on the Prairie series.
There are several beautiful state parks in the vicinity as well. In Buffalo, you will find the Bennett Spring State Park, a small park boasting a large pavilion ideal for small to mid-sized gatherings. The Big Sugar Creek State Park in Cassville is ideal for hiking, offering spectacular scenery with a location nestled in the foothills of the Ozarks.
