Enjoy a Naturific Trip to Wonders of Wildlife!
Branson offers something for everyone during your family's vacation and the outdoorsmen is certainly no exception. With lakes for boating and fishing and beautiful hiking trails in the Ozarks, nature surrounds you at every turn and offers plenty of opportunity for everyone to enjoy the great outdoors.
One must-see for all lovers of nature is the Wonders of Wildlife Zooquarium in Springfield. Lauded throughout the country as "the American National Fish and Wildlife Museum" and "a Celebration of Wildlife" the museum is a 92,000 square foot tribute to the conservation of America's wildlife and the nation's heritage of hunting and fishing. An interactive attraction that features more than 250 species of wildlife from throughout North America including saltwater and freshwater fish, sharks, waterfowl, bobcats, paddlefish, otters and an American bald eagle, it is a brilliant combination of aquarium, zoo and museum, that provides hours of entertainment and education to millions of visitors each year.
You'll visit a tree-top free-flight aviary where you'll see dozens of birds and participate in various hands-on exhibits. Then it's on to a re-creation of Table Rock Lake where you'll find ducks, beaver, otter and even a bobcat or two prowling the banks. Museum exhibits include the "Why I Hunt" display which teaches the reasoning behind hunting and its help in the conservation of America's wildlife. The "Hooves, Horn, Hide and Hair" exhibit teaches visitors about the nation's wildlife and the many uses of animals. In the "Heroes of Conservation" you'll learn about the lives of famous outdoorsmen and women who have dedicated their lives to the conservation of America's wildlife and nature.
After a ride down the escalator or elevator (for handicap accessibility) you'll emerge into a viewing room with a 19 foot acrylic wall for a look into the freshwater aquarium then on to some of the smaller aquariums. Next you'll get a look at more than 100 live bats which inhabit the walk-through cave and are contained by glass walls. The museum's main attraction is yet to come. A gigantic salt water aquarium which holds 225,000 gallons of water is known as "Out to Sea." Here you'll see sharks, rays, eels and more in their natural habitat as you view this breathtaking, underwater scene and come face to face with the ocean-life housed here.
The museum is owned by a non-profit foundation and gets most of its funding from Springfield's hotel and motel sales taxes, various bonds and grants and private donations along with admission fees. Though there is no affiliation or business relationship, the property on which the museum was built was donated by Bass Pro founder Johnny Morris and is located next to Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World where an outdoorsmen can find anything they need for getting in touch with nature. From fishing and camping equipment to hunting items, boating equipment and electronics, Bass Pro Shops offers one of the largest outdoors inventories in the country.
