The first building was a small building used as a real estate office on the corner of Jefferson and Commercial streets, and it was quickly joined by J.J. Barnard's grocery store and Dr. Hansford's Drug Store. Soon more stores popped up and created what is now known as C-Street. As the years rolled on and the railroad moved through, the street grew in popularity due to economic growth from the railroad. It became a hub of both industry and entertainment until the railroad began to decline in the 1960's. In the 1970's the found new life when interest came around to renew and restore the historic street. After some rocky years, Commercial Street, or C-Street as she's nicknamed, has become a booming section with many businesses, events, and eateries. Today, artists flock to the area to sell their wares and each Saturday the street hosts an open city market where you'll find wonderful local produce, amazing local honey, handmade soaps, baked goods, herbal concoctions and salves, hand sewn goods, homemade greeting cards, unique jewelry, and more. The street also hosts a day spa, dance school, the city's oldest tavern, art galleries, antique markets, boutiques, bakeries, and a chocolate factory.
